Why choose a Professional Handyman Company It’s only a small job…. Anybody with a pickup truck and a ladder can call himself a handyman or general contractor in Pennsylvania. Anybody can take a stab at remodeling bathroom or kitchen. Pennsylvania does little to regulate the home improvement industry in spite of the new Home Improvement protection law. While many contractors are honest, many choose to skirt the edge of propriety and expose you the home owner to serious risks. People who use the handyman industry are particularly vulnerable. It’s only a small job is what many people think. I’m sure he can handle it because even I know something about how to do it. The fact is anyone can be a handyman for hire and rarely does a handyman turn down a job because they never did it before or are unsure how to do it. However the risks go far beyond the lack of skill or knowledge that could cause your repair to be less than right. Not being properly insured is very common. Anyone you hire to work in your home should have General Liability and Workers Compensation at minimum. General liability only covers you against any damage caused by the handyman to your home or property. Say he is replacing a bad outlet and accidentally shorts out the line and fries your brand new Hi-Def LCD TV. Or maybe he puts in some new baseboard and his nail gun hits a water pipe behind the wall. Several days later your finished basement looks like a waterfall hit it. If they don’t have coverage you are relying on your homeowners insurance. And your rates will go up because of it. The new law only requires $50,000 in GL which doesn’t cover very much. The worst case scenario however is lack of Workers Compensation Insurance. Even fewer carry Comp than GL because it is very expensive and as with GL there is no one checking to make sure you have it and no consequences to the handyman for not having it. PA not only has no requirement, a single proprietor cannot even buy coverage here. A worker performing even a low skill job like cleaning a gutter, if he falls and is injured, without his own coverage you are the employer and are liable to cover his injuries. Besides paying for medical you are liable for lost earnings as well. How do you know whether they are insured or not? You can ask them, however the most likely answer will be yes whether true or not. They might possibly even produce a document and yet you can’t be sure. It is easy to get insurance with payment terms and then not make payments. The only reliable way is to ask for the name and phone of their insurance agent and then you need to call for proof of present coverage. We provide this information all the time to our customers. Hiring a professional handyman service insures the job is done right. Professionals have the proper tools and skills to complete the tasks quickly, efficiently and most import, properly. Using a service as opposed to an independent person provides a much greater level of reliability and accountability. A professional handyman service provides:
